The Silver Trumpets

10 The Lord spoke further to Moses, saying, ²“Make yourself two trumpets of silver, you shall make them of hammered work; and you shall use them for ^(A)summoning the congregation and breaking camp. ³Now ^(B)when both are blown, all the congregation shall meet you at the entrance of the tent of meeting. ⁴But if only one is blown, then the ^(C)leaders, the heads of the ^[a]divisions of Israel, shall meet you. ⁵And when you blow an alarm, the camps that are pitched ^(D)on the east side shall set out. ⁶Then when you sound an alarm the second time, the camps that are pitched on ^(E)the south side shall set out; an alarm is to be sounded for them to break camp. ⁷When convening the assembly, however, you shall blow the trumpets without ^(F)sounding an alarm. ⁸^(G)The sons of Aaron, moreover, the priests, shall blow the trumpets; and this shall be a permanent statute for you throughout your generations. ⁹And when you go to war in your land against the enemy who ^(H)attacks you, then you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, so that you will be ^(I)thought of by the Lord your God, and be saved from your enemies. ¹⁰Also on the day of your joy and at your appointed ^[b]feasts, and on the first days of your months, ^(J)you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings, and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings; and they shall be as a reminder of you before your God. I am the Lord your God.”

The Tribes Leave Sinai

¹¹Now in ^(K)the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud was lifted from above the ^[c]tabernacle of the testimony; ¹²and the sons of Israel set out on ^(L)their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai. Then the cloud settled in the ^(M)wilderness of Paran. ¹³^(N)So they moved on for the first time in accordance with the ^[d]command of the Lord through Moses. ¹⁴The ^[e]flag of the camp of the sons of Judah, by their armies, ^(O)set out first, with Nahshon the son of Amminadab, over its army, ¹⁵and Nethanel the son of Zuar, over the tribal army of the sons of Issachar; ¹⁶and Eliab the son of Helon over the tribal army of the sons of Zebulun.

¹⁷^(P)Then the tabernacle was taken down; and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who were carrying the tabernacle, set out. ¹⁸Next ^(Q)the flag of the camp of Reuben, by their armies, set out with Elizur the son of Shedeur, over its army, ¹⁹and Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai over the tribal army of the sons of Simeon, ²⁰and Eliasaph the son of Deuel was over the tribal army of the sons of Gad.

²¹^(R)Then the Kohathites set out, carrying the holy objects; and ^(S)the tabernacle was set up before their arrival. ²²^(T)Next the flag of the camp of the sons of Ephraim, by their armies, set out, with Elishama the son of Ammihud over its army, ²³and Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur over the tribal army of the sons of Manasseh; ²⁴and Abidan the son of Gideoni over the tribal army of the sons of Benjamin.

²⁵^(U)Then the flag of the camp of the sons of Dan, by their armies, which formed the ^(V)rear guard for all the camps, set out, with Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai over its army, ²⁶and Pagiel the son of Ochran over the tribal army of the sons of Asher; ²⁷and Ahira the son of Enan over the tribal army of the sons of Naphtali. ²⁸^[f]This was the order of marching for the sons of Israel by their armies as they set out.

²⁹Then Moses said to ^(W)Hobab the son of ^(X)Reuel the Midianite, Moses’ father-in-law, “We are setting out to the place of which the Lord said, ‘^(Y)I will give it to you.’ ^(Z)Come with us and we will do you good, for the Lord ^(AA)has ^[g]promised good concerning Israel.” ³⁰But he said to him, “^(AB)I will not come, but rather will go to my own land and relatives.” ³¹Then he said, “Please do not leave us, since you know ^[h]where we should camp in the wilderness, and you ^(AC)will be as eyes for us. ³²So it will be, if you go with us, that ^[i]^(AD)whatever good the Lord ^[j]does for us, ^(AE)we will ^[k]do for you.”

³³^(AF)So they moved on from the mountain of the Lord three days’ journey, with ^(AG)the ark of the covenant of the Lord going on in front of them for the ^[l]three days, to seek out ^(AH)a resting place for them. ³⁴^(AI)And the cloud of the Lord was over them by day when they set out from the camp.

³⁵Then it came about when the ark set out that Moses said,

“^(AJ)Rise up, Lord!
And may Your enemies be scattered,
And those ^(AK)who hate You flee from Your presence.”

³⁶And when it came to rest, he said,

“^(AL)Return, Lord,
To the myriad ^(AM)thousands of Israel.”

The God of Sinai and of the Sanctuary.

68 ^[a]May ^(A)God arise, ^[b]may His enemies be scattered,
And ^[c]may those who hate Him flee from His presence.
²As ^(B)smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
As ^(C)wax melts before a fire,
So the ^(D)wicked will perish before God.
³But the ^(E)righteous will be joyful; they will rejoice before God;
Yes, they will rejoice with gladness.
⁴Sing to God, ^(F)sing praises to His name;
^[d]^(G)Exalt Him who ^(H)rides through the deserts,
Whose ^(I)name is ^[e]the Lord, and be jubilant before Him.

⁵A ^(J)father of the fatherless and a ^(K)judge ^[f]for the widows,
Is God in His ^(L)holy dwelling.
⁶God ^[g]^(M)makes a home for the lonely;
He ^(N)leads out the prisoners into prosperity,
Only ^(O)the rebellious live in parched lands.

⁷God, when You ^(P)went forth before Your people,
When You ^(Q)marched through the desert, Selah
⁸The ^(R)earth quaked;
The ^(S)heavens also dropped rain at the presence of God;
^[h]^(T)Sinai itself quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel.
⁹You ^(U)made plentiful rain fall, God;
You confirmed Your inheritance when it was ^[i]parched.
¹⁰Your creatures settled in it;
In Your kindness You ^(V)provided for the poor, God.

¹¹The Lord gives the ^[j]command;
The ^(W)women who proclaim good news are a great army:
¹²“^(X)Kings of armies flee, they flee,
And she who remains at home will ^(Y)divide the spoils!”
¹³^[k]When you lie down ^(Z)among the sheepfolds,
You are like the wings of a dove covered with silver,
And its pinions with ^[l]glistening gold.
¹⁴When the Almighty ^(AA)scattered the kings ^[m]there,
It was snowing in ^(AB)Zalmon.

¹⁵^(AC)The mountain of Bashan is a ^[n]mountain of God;
The mountain of Bashan is a mountain of many peaks.
¹⁶Why do you look with envy, you mountains of many peaks,
At the mountain God has ^(AD)desired as His dwelling?
Indeed, ^(AE)the Lord will dwell there forever.
¹⁷The ^(AF)chariots of God are ^[o]myriads, ^(AG)thousands upon thousands;
^[p]The Lord is among them as at Sinai, in holiness.
¹⁸You have ^(AH)ascended on high, You have ^(AI)led captive Your captives;
You have received gifts among people,
Even among the rebellious as well, that ^[q]the Lord God may dwell there.

¹⁹Blessed be the Lord, who daily ^(AJ)bears our burden,
^(AK)The God who is our salvation. Selah
²⁰God is to us a ^(AL)God of salvation;
And ^(AM)to ^[r]God the Lord belong ways of escape ^[s]from death.
²¹God certainly will ^(AN)shatter the heads of His enemies,
The hairy ^[t]head of one who goes about in his guilt.
²²The Lord ^[u]said, “^(AO)I will bring them back from Bashan.
I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,
²³So that ^[v]^(AP)your foot may shatter them in blood,
And the tongue of your ^(AQ)dogs may have its portion from your enemies.”

²⁴They have seen ^(AR)Your procession, God,
The procession of my God, my King, ^[w]^(AS)into the sanctuary.
²⁵The ^(AT)singers went on, the musicians after them,
^[x]In the midst of the ^(AU)young women beating tambourines.
²⁶^(AV)Bless God in the congregations,
Even the Lord, you who are of the ^(AW)fountain of Israel.
²⁷^(AX)Benjamin, the ^[y]youngest, is there, ^[z]ruling them,
The leaders of Judah in their company,
The leaders of ^(AY)Zebulun, the leaders of Naphtali.

²⁸^[aa]Your God has ^(AZ)commanded your strength;
Show Yourself strong, God, You ^(BA)who acted ^[ab]in our behalf.
²⁹^[ac]Because of Your temple at Jerusalem
^(BB)Kings will bring gifts to You.
³⁰Rebuke the ^(BC)animals ^[ad]in the reeds,
The herd of ^(BD)bulls with the calves of the peoples,
Trampling the pieces of silver;
He has ^(BE)scattered the peoples who delight in war.
³¹^[ae]Messengers will come from ^(BF)Egypt;
^[af]^(BG)Cush will quickly stretch out her hands to God.

³²Sing to God, you ^(BH)kingdoms of the earth,
^(BI)Sing praises to the Lord, Selah
³³To Him who ^(BJ)rides upon the ^[ag]^(BK)highest heavens, which are from ancient times;
Behold, ^(BL)He ^[ah]speaks with His voice, a ^(BM)mighty voice.
³⁴^(BN)Ascribe strength to God;
His majesty is over Israel,
And ^(BO)His strength is in the ^[ai]skies.
³⁵^[aj]God, You are ^(BP)awesome from Your ^[ak]sanctuary.
The God of Israel Himself ^(BQ)gives strength and power to the people.
